Welcome to Millbrook

A great destination and a delightful place to live, Millbrook is one of the loveliest small towns in the Hudson Valley. Known for its sporting and cultural scenes and its welcoming sense of country gentility, Millbrook offers a variety of attractions for visitors and residents to enjoy.

Millbrook has retained its 20th century country charm and the pleasures of small town life are reflected in the friendly, family-run, independent businesses of the village and Mabbettsville and Washington Hollow, its outlying hamlets. The tree-lined streets of the village offer restaurants, retail shops, eclectic boutiques, art galleries and antique stores as well as stores carrying the necessities of daily life.

The Millbrook-Town of Washington Business Association is dedicated to fostering and preserving commercial activity in our historic village and its neighboring hamlets. The MBA strives to establish a welcoming business atmosphere throughout our community for the benefit of our members, residents and visitors from near and far.

We invite you to explore our directory of local businesses for information on accommodations, restaurants and shopping opportunities. Discover all that Millbrook has to offer.

Visit us once and we know you will come back again and again.

Mike Flanigan, co-owner with his brother Pat Flanigan, of Reardon Briggs Co. Inc., 3300 Franklin Avenue, answers a few questions -

How long has your business been in Millbrook?

Reardon Briggs Hardware has been in Millbrook since 1907.

Describe your business and the products and services offered -

We have several businesses.  I run the hardware store in the village and Pat runs our lawn and garden equipment business.  We also have some rental apartments and own the building which houses Slammin' Salmon.

The details - hours of operation, phone number, etc. -

Hours -
Monday -  Thursday from 7:30am to 5pm
Friday from 7:30am to 6pm
Saturday from 8am to 5pm
Sunday from 10am to 1pm

Phone -
845-677-8201
Fax -
845-677-6137

Does your business have a website? Are you using social media? Do you think it has helped your business?

We do have a website, www.reardonbriggs.com, and a Facebook page.  We are also fortunate to have some young, tech savy employees to manage these things.

How would you describe your business philosophy?

Know our customers, provide the best service we can, remember who we are.

What is the "secret" to being in business for such a long time?

Old age and high pain threshold.

Biggest opportunity/biggest challenge faced in the last year or so -

The biggest challenge we have faced recently is the perception that the business district of our village is failing.  The biggest opportunity is the synergism's that are occurring among many of the businesses here.  There is a lot of energy building in this business community, and the pendulum is beginning to swing the other way.

How many employees? Who has been with you the longest (and how long)?

In the hardware store, Jacques Pecourt has been with me for 18 years.

Favorite thing about being in business? Least favorite thing?

My favorite thing is being in my store interacting with my customers.  My least favorite is doing it 60 hours a week.

If a family business, can you tell us the "genealogy" of the business?

Our father bought the business with his partner, Bill Howe, in the early sixties.  Dad purchased Bill's stock from his widow several years later and left the company to my brother, sisters and myself.  Pat and I are now the owners.

Looking ahead, what do you think the future holds for Millbrook businesses?

A friend recently remarked to me that he is bullish on Millbrook.  So am I.  Our recent slump notwithstanding, Millbrook is a great place to live and to do business.  I think we are lucky to be where we are.

What do you think a store in a community like Millbrook can offer shoppers that they won't get at a mall or big shopping center?

Personal service.  As they said on Cheers, it's great to go where everybody knows your name.
